I've made these lanterns a variety of ways. They all usually start with a cheap walmart solar light, a buck each. I know this is a picture of the chrome ones, but for this project I used the black ones.
I took the top of the solar light and used a weather proof/ water proof super glue to attach it to the lid. I also spray painted the lids. Make sure to put plenty of glue to seal around the edge. You don't want water getting inside.
I used some acrylic paint mixed with mod podge glue and applied it with a sponge brush on the inside of the jars. I just wanted a nice swirl of color.
NOTE: If you just use the paint alone it will wash off easily. Mixing it with the glue makes it stick better and makes it more durable. I think you could use acrylic paint and bake the jars and that would work too. You can also use a stained glass spray paint instead of acrylic. I was thinking thrifty so I did it this way.
And at night.
I love how this looks on the stairs.
I actually made these for my Son's birthday party with his friends. He wanted to do a camp out this year. The boys each got to take one home at the end of the party.
