I gave the whole thing one coat of Glidden paint in winter sky gray, same color I used in the living room. Then I lightly distressed the top only. I left the base alone. I don't like pieces that are heavily distressed, I just wanted to give it a little character. For the top I wanted an antique/vintage style look. There are lots of ways to get that type of look. I use a dark wood stain. I applied it to small areas at a time and quickly wiped it off. That's it. You can add stain, sand, stain, sand until you get the look you want. Just don't apply too much stain at once.
